What is in a name? (Part 1)

First off - I absolutely hated doing this, but I got this much done so I figured I'd post it.  I can't guarantee I'll finish because again, I absolutely hated it.  Potentially the lamest thing ever done on the blog, cock boy is running out of ideas...

This is a post about the meaning of each player in PCTI based off their surname, both the actual meaning and my interpretation (along with some additional commentary that provides zero insight).  I hope you guys fucking hate it as much as I have.  This is in alphabetical order, so don't be offended where you land in these spots.

·         Beasley – also commonly spelled Beesley, Beazley, Beesely, or Biesley

o   Actual meaning – locationale name from Beesley in Lancashire England, a compound of beos and leah which mean ‘bent grass’ and ‘wood clearing’ respectively.

o   What it means to me – fighter that day walks as a nonchalant modern day adonis, persistent in the pursuit of victory.

§  Reaction – good ole woody bent grass of the quad pod sure does get a lot of love for being the only player to not win a single game.  My personal opinion is that he showed so many flashes, despite the fact he was on a team that is tied for the least amount of wins in the history of sports, he was still able to impress his peers.  My lone question is how Beas’ unselfishness is going to fit in to such a guard heavy team, not to mention Abe and Eskillatron always wanting to have the ball in their hands.  It will serve his team best to make sure he is the lead dog and runs the show.

·         Carney – also commonly spelled Corney, Kearney, O’Caherny, O’Carney, and Kehearney

o   Actual meaning – a development from the ancient Gaelic name O’Catharnaigh, meaning the male descendent of a warlike chief.

o   What it means to me – excellence that is best served bratty, with comedic timing second to none.

§  Reaction – I was devastated to find out that the actual meaning of Carney wasn’t circus folk.  But hearing descendent of a warlike chief, I almost stopped writing this post because I have no interest in BC getting any satisfaction out of this knowledge.  Will the Brat be able to regain this supposed dominance from PCTI 1 or will the man that best represents England by always driving left, garbage bucket his way to another all-tourney selection?  My take is that BC has a huge year with the lone Big Man on the other team getting worn down by Bruiser the whole series creating constant mis-matches.

·         Donley – also commonly spelled Donnelly and O’Donnelly

o   Actual meaning – Anglicized from of the Gaelic O’Donanghalie meaning the descendent of a “Donnghal”, which breaks down into Donn and Gal or Brown and Valour.

o   What it means to me – the most consistently over-credited player in PCTI that does everything decent enough so that no one realizes how pathetic of a player is actually on the floor.

§  Reaction – will the first all-tourney selection make the Brown Hero feel like he deserves more shots?  If so, it could be a long weekend for his teammates after having to hear all that clang music, oh yeah, and the losing.  I guarantee no one is reading this at this point. Moving on…

·         Eskildsen – no other common spellings

o   Actual meaning – of Norwegian origin and a personal name (or name made up by a person) derived from someone named Eskild, and most likely Eskild’s-son.  Eskild itself loosely translates to ‘God Helmet’.

o   What it means to me – positioning, positioning, positioning and basketball IQ.

§  Reaction – everyone talks about God Helmet’s bball IQ, but rarely points out how he always manages to be in the right position offensively and defensively.  Obviously those two are linked, but knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things.  In my opinion there isn’t enough noise about the two-time captain and appointed hoops Einstein potentially failing as a captain for the 2nd time.  I mean Sabin had an epic fail last year, but that was only 1 year.  All I know is, I sure wouldn’t want to be the only guy to lead two teams into disappointment.

·         Higdon – no other common spellings

o   Actual meaning – an English name that translates into Intellectual or Strong Ruler

o   What it means to me – intellectual strong ruler, with the ability to hit the ghost button and appear out of nowhere for a back cut.

§  Reaction – owning the spotlight nickname, hollerin at exotic lead singers, and being a compliment to the best team in sports history has allowed Mr. Higdon to easily enter the PCTI family. Although there are no questions about what Spot brings off the court, his on the court contributions are expected, to not improve but expand.  The backcuts, big shots, and solid D (with an apparent affinity to rebound) are going to be necessary for his team to get a W.  Is he willing to step his on court game up to match his off court game (wait, is it even possible?).

·         Hopkins – also commonly spelled Hopkin and Hopkinson, other variations include Hop, Hob, Dob, Nob

o   Actual meaning – Welsh name that translates to Renowned Fame

o   What it means to me – just a flat out good time

§  Reaction – can Hops continuously hit big shots for his team?  Does the Hob Nob finally miss some big shots and get his confidence absolutely destroyed?  I think Hops intangibles are legitimate, but with a team that includes both Eskilsdsen and Krow need a third intangibles guy?  Time will tell, but I think Hops shows up this year in one of two ways.  1. Ready to defend and help his boy Abe become the only recognized (yeah I said it) undefeated player in PCTI. 2. Only wants to amplify the exclusive Quad Pod and effectively eliminates himself from providing any on court input.

  1. Unfortunately, these posts are too creative to not be completed so you are obligated to finish. A couple highlights:

Beasley meaning "bent grass," further proving how good he is at all things that are nature.

Great point about Skillz potentially being 0-2. Could he be in that class of coaches I criticize all the time that are good teachers but bad talent evaluators? see: Jeff Fisher.

Spotlight hitting a button and appearing out of nowhere for a back cut was nicely crafted.

I read enough of Donley's name to recognize he called out the fact that no one was reading... You honestly think I have anything better to do? I would read anything from top to bottom put on this blog.
