The Wire Comparison, Part II

After part 1, I realized some of you have not watched the Wire. In the wise words of Clay Davis:

You should clear your weekend plans and get started. If you need a HBO login, Joe has one from the SAG. Anyways, here is part 2 comparing players in PCTI to The Wire characters:

TP

“That’s real muscle right there” – Bodie
Bodie was the kid that raised from the corner boy to a general for Barksdale’s crew fairly quickly. Similarly TP rose from a late round pick to 3rd overall! The thing that made Bodie great was he knew his role and he tried to teach others the best way to succeed was listen to those giving the orders. Will TP listen to those giving him orders or will he try and do more to prove his worth at 3? Also, this quote was just too good not to give TP.

BC

“But you know cameras. Kinda like pigeons in the storm. You know what I'm saying? Sometimes they come back, sometimes... but I'll keep an ear out on it.” – Marlo
Marlo was the young kingpin that was trying to take down Avon. In many ways, he was different than Avon, but he also has a lot of the same tendencies that made him great. If Abe is Avon, BC must be Marlo. It took Marlo’s crew years before they took over West Baltimore’s drug scene but eventually did. This quote is also fitting because BC saying he was done with the cameras, but he’s like a pigeon in the storm, this time he came back. Is this the year BC take the crown from Avon as PCTI’s best player?

Smo

“Little Squeak, off of Lanvale. Yeah, she used to boost for Turtle Wells' old mob. She lost a little bit of weight, too. I mean, looking a lot better than I remember. And I remember a lot about that girl.” – Bubbles
I imagine Smo saying this exact quote to BC and fucking lose it every time. I just hope he says it at PCTI. Bubbles was one of my favorite characters as he was always in a good mood and trying to get people around him to laugh. Unfortunately, he also struggled with shooting up. On and off the court Smo tries to make everyone laugh but unfortunately, he struggles with caring about basketball (and shooting up, per Ben and TP). In both cases, pretty much everyone is rooting for him. Can Smo turn it around like Bubbles did?

Doctor Joey

“I still wake up white in a city that ain't.” – Carcetti
Carcetti was an up and coming politician that wanted to make an impact the “right way”. Being a white politician in a city that was majority white, he knew he was going to have to hustle. Similarly, Actor decided to take on Tinseltown even though he is ugly as sin in a town where everyone is beautiful. He finally broke through with his role as Gunner in Talents. He continues to gobble up tens of followers with his dramedy performances on Instagram as JT$ingz. It was clear last year at PCTI that his fame had gotten to his head and didn’t perform well. Rumor has it he went to rehab immediately following Cincy. Will he bounce back this year or will Gunner Dawson return to the courts?

Sabes

“I'm doing like one of them marriage counselors. Charge by the hour to tell some fool he need to bring some flowers home. Then charge another hour telling the bitch she oughta suck some cock every little once in a while. You know, keep a marriage strong like that.” – Prop Joe
First off, Sabin and Prop Joe are twins. Second, they are roughly the same age. JOKES!! The comparison is great because Prop Joe was the “wise” gangster that always gave advice and had his hands in everything. Just like Saban is the “wise” PCTI guy and does everything well on the court. I’m really excited to see who Saban takes under his wing this year. I’m also really excited for when shit goes down with him and Joe. I also think Saban is great to get into a conversation with about life because he has some great things to share but he also genuinely listens which most of us don’t (you know, because we are narcissistic assholes). I doubt you’ll hear Sabez give the advice Prop Joe did, even though it’s #smart.

Spot

“At all hazards, a man must keep up appearances. Dignity, I say. Dignity above all.” – Bunk
A man that keeps up appearances is Spot. Not afraid to be himself, he will dress as wild as he wants but can also be the coolest looking dude in the room. Bunk was also an excellent detective but stayed within the rules of the law. Spot is an excellent player but stay within the rules of himself. He doesn’t turn the ball over, knocks down open 3s, cuts and drives to the rim, and rarely gets burnt bad on D. Off the court, Spot and I have been able to enjoy a few cold ones together and while there are times we both get loose (same as Bunk and McNulty), he is also one of the best guys to have a conversation with.

DK

“We didn’t think we would make it this fucking far, but fuck if we ain’t standing here right now with the whole world at our feet. The whole world, man, not these fucking corners. The whole world, B.” - Stringer
I had to finish with the captains and IMO the two best characters in the show. Stringer is the “smart” gangster that goes to school and takes business classes to figure out a way to run their drug ring better, but always played second banana to Avon. He also tried to get in legitimate business deals investing in real estate (with shady politicians). DK has always been known as a gritty defender that wouldn’t hurt you on offense and an overall smart player (plus both are beautiful men). He also continues to work on his game and really developed his shot over the years and carried his team on both ends for the first couple days. Stringer’s demise came from him thinking he could run the business without involving Barksdale. Did anyone think Dan would make it this far? Fuck it he’s the MVP with the whole PCTI at his feet. PCTI man, not 3 on 3 pick up. PCTI, boys.

BIN

“Y’all might need to think this through and stop wasting my time, ’cause Omar can come back tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day.” - Omar
Omar comin! Omar comin! This is the cry of many people as Omar would walk down the street in broad daylight whistling while carrying his sawed-off shotgun, a bulletproof vest, and a trench coat. He was a fan favorite because he would rob the gangs and take care of the poor. Also, Omar was gay and I still have questions about Wilson and TP. At one point, Omar had to jump down from roughly 50 feet up to save himself, which was basically what Ben did with the trash can pass last year. This was the hardest character to pick a good quote for because he has so many but I thought this represented Ben well because when you are guarding him, he keeps coming at you. Omar was the most destructive single person on the show and wasn’t afraid to take on anyone. While Abe is consistently better, I think Ben is the most destructive player in PCTI when he is rolling. Will Dani’s team be saying “Ben comin! Ben comin!” all weekend or will it just be TP?

I know the writing was choppy but hopefully everyone enjoyed. Again, if you haven’t watched the show, I would tell you to get on it ASAP. I’ll leave you with one of the best scenes of the entire show:

PCTI Shooting % Breakdown

Typically when I make my mind up I'm going to dig deep into PCTI stats, I always find something interesting worth discussing.  One instinct I had recently was a belief that the shooting has actually gotten better over the course of the last seven years and to no surprise of anyone, I was wrong.

First, a quick snap shot of the historical high/low percentages...

What's most pathetic is how we continue to get worse from the charity stripe...

Players currently above the historical league averages....

The Wire Comparison, Part I

Some of you may know, but I am a huge Bill Simmons fan. I know some other of you also enjoy him, so if you are wondering if I ripped this post idea off him, 100% yes. The other reason I decided to do it was because Carrie and I recently ran through all 5 seasons of The Wire so it is fresh on my mind. So here are my comparisons of The Wire characters, with a quote from them and PCTI participants:
"Thin line between heaven and here." - Bubbles
This quote is for PCTI. Don't know exactly what Bubbles meant, but to me, PCTI is about as close as you can get to heaven here on earth.

Abe

"The game is the fuckin' game. Period." - Avon Barksdale
This one was pretty obvious: best player in the game is the guy that runs the streets. Avon is the guy that grew up on the streets of Baltimore and became the kingpin. He isn't the guy that gets worried over small details, but thinks talent and street smarts can win over. Abe has a similar mindset. I could imagine Abe saying that exact same quote on a podcast (RIP PCTI podcasts) so I thought I would use it for Avon's quote.

Wes

"'Failure to properly identify myself as a police officer.' Sounds like what I was guilty of most of my career, actually." - Pryzbylewski
Wes is Prez in the early years as Prez thought he should be a police officer, along with his father-in-law and others. He didn't excel until he realized he should try another line of work. Wes I think is also conflicted within PCTI. What is his role on offense? How aggressive does he need to be? Is he trying to improve enough to no longer be picked last each year? Does he even want to be involved? Questions he or others ask. Last year he showed signs of improvement before his injury derailed him, will this year be better? Or is he failing to properly identify himself as a baller?

Bruiser

Okay The point I'm making is this: Soldiering and policing, they ain't the same thing” – Major Colvin
Major “Bunny” Colvin came on to the scene and made a big splash with his outside the box thinking with how his district would police drugs. He a Bruise seem to have some similar qualities: both seem patient (watch Bruiser post multiple possessions in a row with little touches), you don’t want to mess with either of them, and both want to help their “team” be successful. Colvin eventually takes the fall for his outside the box plan, similar to Bruise taking the blame for some PCTI losses. Will this be the year he gets back to All Tourney form and propels his team to a victory?

Donley

“I guess what I'm tryin' to say is... not everything comes down to how you carry it in the street. I mean, it do come down to that if you gonna be in the street. But that ain't the only way to be” – Dennis “Cutty”
Cutty was the former gangster that ended up getting out of the game and started helping young’ns stay off the street by boxing. Both he and Donley are physically impressive and are good with the ladies (pre-marriage*). Donley has always been all in on PCTI (well, except for that whole leaving early on Sunday in PCTI II) but now that he has 2 kids, will he still have the same dedication. “Not everything comes down to PCTI. I mean, it do come down to it if you gonna be in PCTI, but that ain’t the only way to be.” – Donley or nah?

Andrew C.

“Who we gotta fuck in this town to get a real office?” – Greggs
Andrew C.: “Who we gotta fuck in this town to get in PCTI?
Dan K.:

Rainbow:

Beas

“Nice doin' business with you, gentlemen.” – Michael
Michael is one of my favorite characters on the wire, and one of my best friends in PCTI. It is fitting they have the first name because they are both straight killers. Beas took care of Joe last year like Michael took care of Snoop in season 5. I think Joe even asked Beas “how my hair look, Mike?” during one of the games. Similar to the character, Beas is all business on the court and looks out for his own.

AHOP

“The things that make me right for this job, maybe they’re the same things that make me wrong for everything else.” – McNulty
You didn’t think I was going to write this post and not be one of the main characters in the show, did you? McNulty was a drunk who would show up to work hungover half the time. He also was a really good detective because he would do whatever it took to get the job done. I like to fancy myself the same way. McNulty also had a way of getting people to do their work better and hopefully I’m able to do that with some of my teammates.

Rainbow

“We're building something here, detective. We're building it from scratch. All the pieces matter.” – Lester Freeman

Lester was very unconventional when he started but was super talented. The same goes for Rainbow’s game. I played with him and DK in Dallas and as whacky as some of the moves he makes, he had me on skates a few times. Similar to Freeman, he seems mild manner on the surface but you quickly find out how passionate he is about winning. I like the quote because it basically is Bow talking about his game. He’s building it from scratch and ALL the pieces matter.

PCTI8 Rivalry Watch

First official rivalry watch, and man does it look ugly for one of the team's captains...
  • Big Brent and Ben:
    • STORY-LINE 1, Taking Out the Trash: This started years ago than got covered up by the media, but it's back in a big way... Depending on where you stand on the trash can heard round the world incident last year, it's important to note how poorly the Big Guy took the lack of appreciation for the biggest shot in PCTI history... What has gone covered up through Big Brent pounding his chest about not being appreciated was how incredible of a pass it was that Ben made to save the play and set up the game clinching shot.
    • STORY-LINE 2, Decorated History: Despite a better career record and comparable overall stats, it's no question Big Brent is less loved in the PCTI community than Ben, reflected by Ben's 1 MVP and 3 ATT selections, compared to Big's 1 DMVP and 1 ATT and dead even career stats.
  • Smo and Ben:
    • STORY-LINE 1, Disrespect: For those that don't know Smo, the guy can slip into Diva mode and make life a living hell for everyone involved if provoked... And Ben poked the bear in a big way... Cutting one of the funniest promo's in PCTI history, Ben provided some in depth analysis on Smo and what he will be bringing to his team which can be interpreted simply as "Nothing."
    • STORY-LINE 2, Trade Value: In behind the scenes news, Dan and Ben were in trade talks for Dan to acquire the rights to the man they call Smo, only to be brutally rebuffed... After the video analysis Dan went in with an offer he felt Ben couldn't refuse (Smo for nothing), but he did not bite... Now you are left with a disrespected, unmotivated diva that hates basketball and hasn't played in two years to do your teams dirty work in the trenches.
  • Actor/Sabin and Ben:
    • STORY-LINE, "Giving A Crap:" Actor and Sabin have been well regarded as two of the top guards in PCTI their entire career, with Act being a one time MVP and two time ATT selection, and Sabin being elected a one time DMVP and one time ATT... This year, they were both passed up by two up and coming prospects in Beas and Spotlight, and the reason was sighted by Ben as the fact that he likes "Playing with people that give a crap." If you're either Act or Sabin, there's no other way to take it than you just don't care as much as the other two.
  • Smooth vs. PCTI:
    • STORY-LINE, Gaining Respect.... There's no doubt The Smooth is coming into PCTI with the least amount of fanfare in league history.  Between the nickname, a propensity for emotional play, and the way he was added has a lot of people upset and gunning for him come PCTI8.  That will only get worse when he hits his first 3 and starts running his mouth.

PCTI's Most Disrespected-Spotlight on The Big Man

It's no secret that PCTI's Biggest Man has spent a lot of time getting scrutinized over the last seven years... Whether it's his reputation as a Bratty snap-out artist or the fact that he's one handed, people are always paying attention to and talking about the Big Guy...

I was soaking in the tub recently doing my usual PCTI reflection, and something jumped out at me.... Is BC appreciated?  The guy has never been picked outside of the first round so surely he is, right?

WRONG.

It's not even just hoops though... Does anyone ever talk about BC being funny, or one of the more likable guys in PCTI?  I've heard at least six guys get both reps, but never for the man they call P.  Did anyone ever thank him for the draft work?  Doubtful.

Forget about the personal stuff, let's dig into BC's on-court performance.  First, let's look at his career stats...

Career:

  • W/L: 22/17 (2nd all time).
  • Series W/L: 5-2 (2nd all time).
  • PPG: 11.41 (3rd all time).
  • RPG: 7.36 (2nd all time).
  • BPG: .69 (1st all time).
  • Effective Scale: 9.05 (1st all time).
  • Fouls: 91 (1st all time).
  • FG%: 44% (1st all time).
It's pretty clear the guy has had significant success in PCTI over the course of his career, but what jumped out at me is how little recognition he has received for it.  See breakdown below as it relates to awards... BC received the "DMVP" award in year one, which was pretty much the lowest ranking all-tournament team selection despite him averaging 15 and 10 on 50% shooting.

As you can see, BC is in a 4 way tie for 4th place, tied with Beas (who has played in two less PCTI's), Sabin (one less) and Dan who is a career 32% shooter.

Player MVP'S ATT Total
Abe 3 3 6
Wilson 1 3 4
JT Singz 1 2 3
BC 0 2 2
Beas 0 2 2
Sabin 0 2 2
Krow 1 1 2
Spotlight 0 1 1
Donley 0 1 1
Bruise 0 1 1

As good as that info is, let's dig into who has edged The Pun man out every year....
PCTI2:
  • BC (winning team): 10.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 44 FG%, 23.8 MPG.
  • Ben Wilson (losing team): 12.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 33 FG%, 21 3FG%, 30 MPG.
  • Stickman (losing team): 9.3 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 40 FG%, 23.9 MPG.
PCTI3:
  • BC: 11.3 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.3 apg, 45 FG%, 22.5 MPG.
  • Scott Donley: 9.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.0 apg, 35 FG%, 27.5 MPG.
PCTI5:
  • BC: 13.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 1.8 apg, 47 FG%.
  • DK: 8.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 7.0 apg, 33 FG%.
  • Beas: 14.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.8 apg, 43 FG%.
  • Spot: 13.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.8 apg, 51 FG%.
PCTI7:
  • BC: 10.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 47 FG%, lead in blocks, second in steals.
  • Dan:10.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.5 apg,
  • Wilson: 13.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 37.5 FG%, lead in turnovers, no blocks, second to last in steals.

We quit keeping minutes from 4-7, so there's no telling the discrepancy there.  In PCTI5, BC played one half of the first game and ended up with 13 and 7.

I'm not sure what my favorite is...

PCTI2 is compelling with BC beaten out by two members of the losing team, with Ben taking an extra 7 minutes a game to score 2 more points, grab 2 more rebounds, and shoot 11 percentage points worse, and Stickman having two more rebounds per game.

PCTI3 has to be the best... BC scoring, rebounding, assisting, and shooting 10 percentage points higher in 5 less minutes per game, but getting beaten out by Donley who I don't think anyone would argue looks significantly better on the court than Pun ever does.

Morale of the story, in a league that is supposed to appreciate guys for what they bring to the court, and not the way they make it look, Big P has managed to get overlooked in the worst way.

PCTI 8 Team Strengths

Team Strengths – Ben

1) Offensive Firepower – This team has plenty of it. Remarkably, there are 5 players on this team who have gone for more than 23 points in a single PCTI game....Beas (29), Ben (29), Abe (24), Spot (23), and Hops (23). This doesn’t even include Donley, who has scored in double figures 12 times in his PCTI career. If this team can get it going at the same time, it may be tough to slow down.

2) Raining 3s – Equally remarkable, this team boasts 5 players that have made at least 5 triples in a single PCTI game, led by Ben (7), Hops (6), Abe (5), Spot (5), and Beas (5). Although Spotlight is the only shooter on this list above 34% from 3, it signifies that any of these players can get hot from deep and tilt the balance of a game. Quick note that Smo has played in 27 PCTI games and never attempted a 3 ball.

3) QuadPod – This group will either pull the team together or rip it apart from the inside. Looking forward to a good show either way.

Team Strengths – DK

1) Chemistry – This team likes each other. No egos, arrogance, or agendas. Just a bunch of guys who want to help each other to be successful.

2) Efficiency – Perhaps not as explosive as the other team, DK's group is full of players who produce efficient, consistent performances. BC is a lifetime 44% shooter, DK shot 50% from 3 in PCTI 7, and teammates Sabin, TP, and Bruise are lifetime 42% shooters. Even though Joe is thought of as more of an explosive performer, he is also in 40%+ club. If this team can produce consistently efficient performances, it will put pressure on Ben’s team.

3) Boards – I recognize that this is just my subjective opinion, but I will state that this team has the best two rebounders in PCTI and 3 of the top 4. My hope is that this gives us some extra shot opportunities and possessions to tilt the scoreboard in our favor. While the other team has consistent producers on the backboards, this should be a strength that could ultimately tell the tale in PCTI 8.

Strength/Weakness Myths By Player

Every year we make a big deal out of certain aspects of each player, but if you take a step back you will realize a lot of them are not true... Allow me to give my opinion on each player and what the biggest myth about their perceived strengths/weaknesses are...  This post was not edited and is up for debate.

Big Brent:
  • Strength: Length--Although never given credit for rim protection or shot blocking, Pun is known for his wingspan, which is equivalent to a 5'10" man.
  • Weakness: Right Hand/Teammate--Pun is one of the few players in PCTI that can use both hands effectively in game situations.  Additionally, it's worth noting that the Pun Daddy is never talked about as a top PCTI teammate (one of the most overused terms to describe PCTI players), despite the fact that he plays ball to the wall every second of every game, sets screens, distributes the ball, plays tough D, is relentless on the boards, and is always in help D... But I guess his rep as a Brat outweighs everything else he does.
Ben Wilson:
  • Strength: 3PT Shooting--32% for his career, but as with anyone that shoots from a step behind the line, everyone thinks he's better than he is.
  • Weakness: Headcase--Although he definitely is, he offsets it with his uncanny ability to hit big shots in key situations.
Sabin:
  • Strength: Defense--Although a quality defender with great awareness, he's been riding his reputation from PCTI2 as a superior defender... God I hope that Sabin comes back.
  • Weakness: Winning Qualities--Sabin is the consummate teammate in every possible way and has been one of the most effective players in PCTI's history.
Hops:
  • Strength: There are no misconceptions about Hops strengths, he is exactly who is billed to be.
  • Weakness: Rebounding--Although not a perceived weakness, Hops does not get applauded for his work on the glass.  The 4.62 career RPG won't necessarily blow you away, but if you watch the rebounds he gets you will realize the level of difficulty, timing and instincts each requires.
Smo:
  • Strength: Rebounding--All big guys get a rep as a rebounder, but this just ain't Smo's top priority when he's taking care of business on the court.
  • Weakness: Love for the Game--It's no secret Smo hates the game, and all of his actions back that up... Except the way he plays on the court.  He's always in great position, communicating, setting screens, setting up teammates, etc.  He brings it everytime he steps on the court, which is almost never.
Actor:

  • Strength: Defense--His one man press is that of legend and has helped him lead PCTI in career steals, but his tendency to zone out and play freelance D can confuse teammates and lead to breakdowns.
  • Weakness: Selfish--Because Act has the tendency to launch deep 3's or try to get himself going, he is an overall selfless teammate that is constantly trying to set his teammates up and do what it takes to help the team win.
Abe:
  • Strength: Effort--Look, the guy plays hard and you can't debate his rep as the top player in PCTI, but this is one of PCTI's biggest myths... However, he frequently coasts on D, can stand around in the corner on O while he catches his breath, and refuses to use a screen.
  • Weakness: Passing--Abe is one of the best passers in PCTI.. He is 2nd in career assists despite handling the ball a very small amount.
Spotlight:
  • Strength: Rebounding--I give up... Much better last year, but career average of 2.7 rpg no longer constitutes as a strength... That said, he's not afraid to mix it up and always gets a body on someone.
  • Weakness: One Dimensional Offense--Spot is known as just a catch and shoot guy offensively, but he's much more... He's one of the best attackers in PCTI, a guy that efficiently gets in the lane and can hit you with a quick pull up, kick out, or drop in pass to set things up for his teammates.

Michael Business:
  • Strength: 3pt. Shooting--Although very capable, Beas's yearly outbursts occasionally mask his 28.8% shooting from the field.
  • Weakness: Beas is known as one of the most complete players and is pretty much off limits for any sort of negativity, so there are absolutely no misconceptions about his game.
Don:
  • Strength: Rebounding--It's easy to get caught up in watching Donley's fit, athletic frame fly all over the court causing chaos and assume he's a great rebounder.  5.19 rebounds/game is nothing to look the other way at, but it's not quite a strength at this point.
  • Weakness: Offense--Not quite as much a weakness as it is just something he doesn't get enough credit for, but Donley has the best arsenal of low posts moves in PCTI.  He can spin either way, has a nice up and under, quick right hook, fadeaway, and quick spin that is not utilized nearly enough.
Rainbow:
  • Strength: Defense--As with all high effort, rangy steals getters, Rainbow has garnered a rep for D.  Although solid on the defensive end, his steal first mentality can leave him susceptible to losing his man, which can lead to occasional breakdowns.
  • Weakness: Scoring--As with Donley, this isn't as much a known weakness as it just not a known strength... Yet.  Rain is a deadly shooter with deep range that does not require a lot of shots to fill up the stat sheet.
Stickman:
  • Strength: Rebounding--If it's just straight up and down, the Stick is getting every rebound... But with outbursts of 17, 12, 11, and 13 rebounds in a game, the 6.26 career shows the potential for more is definitely there.
  • Weakness: Conditioning--This is overblown.  First off, Stick is like every other physical big man, he gets tired quicker than guards.  That's normal for anyone that has to run from one end of the court to another and constantly throws his body around.  If you notice, he's notorious for taking himself out too quickly, only to find him requesting to come back in a minute later with his infamous "Anyone Need One" call.
Dan:
  • Strengths: Shooting--Although not considered a strength, many have said I'm an underrated shooter.  Despite shooting 50% from 3 last year, it only got my shooting up to 35% from the field and 33% from 3. I'm a horrible shooter.
  • Weakness: Brattiness--Off the court, it's very clear I'm borderline unbearable for the rest of the group, but for the most part I keep my cool on the court.
TP:
  • Strengths: Strength--There's no question he looks the part and probably is a complete beast, but he's more of a finesse player on the court, and his work on the glass is more instinct and position based than it is trying to throw people around like his frame would suggest.
  • Weakness: Scoring--Wilson went on record stating he wasn't going to set the world on fire offensively (and he didn't) however you can see that he has incredibly savvy offensive instincts and puts himself in position to score frequently.  I could see him being 9-11 a game moving forward, which would put him in PCTI's upper echelon both scoring and rebounding.
This pic makes me happy.
